We’ve been planting trees every year for a couple of decades now and i found that planting them straight into grass will work but it’s slow. When mulching the trees in particular in the first year or 2 the growth rate is at least 2-3 times. This is because of the grasses not only competing for water and other resources, but mainly due to the grasses actually stealing sugar off the establishing trees. In this video i show the difference with these 2.5 year old willow trees although the mulched ones are planted into lasagne grow space.
