Rhubarb is a vigorous vegetable native to central Asia and it thrives here in our climate in Ireland. It literally requires no maintenance. We like to plant it as a ground cover especially along borders and under fruit trees as does well in semi shade and suppresses weeds. Some years it sends up a flower stalk attracting pollinators and other beneficial insects. Rhubarb can be grown from seed and by splitting or transplanting the crown (root). Only one variety doesn’t become poisonous after mid summer and it can be harvested right up the very end of the growing season. More detail in the video.
